I didn’t, and I failed miserably because of it.

The original Freedom Planet game features full controller support, which should have been my clue-in to just use a controller from the start. Now equipped with an actual controller and using the same character as I did before, I was able to complete the playthrough and defeat the boss in a little over two minutes. That first playthrough took over eight minutes to complete.įrustrated with my horrible performance, I marched to my office, dug out my Xbox controller, and hooked it to my PC. My jumps lacked precision, my attacks missed, and I got my ass handed to me in the boss battle. I tried playing Freedom Planet 2 first with a keyboard… horrible idea! Platforming games require a level of precision that is unachievable using a keyboard and mouse set up, at least, for me. Genre: Retro-Styled Side-Scrolling Platformer

Platforms: PC (Version Played), “TBA Nintendo Platform” What do I mean by that? Despite its obvious similarities to Sonic the Hedgehog, Freedom Planet 2 sets itself apart from traditional platforming games while still holding on to the charming components that define the genre. It’s hard to gather much from a demo that can be finished in a little over two minutes, however, I have drawn the conclusion that Freedom Planet 2 is definitely not your parent’s platformer. Freedom Planet 2 makes me regret that decision. Though fascinated by indie developers and the masterpieces that they create, I often shy away from playing them, instead opting for AAA titles. The demo itself isn’t that long (one stage with a boss battle), however, the game is just that damn fun that I kept coming back to it, trying to beat my time and experimenting with the four characters in an effort to determine whose move set best fit my play style.īefore playing the Freedom Planet 2 demo, I had never heard of GalaxyTrail or the original Freedom Planet game. Freedom Planet characters have managed to expand past their own games and may continue to do so in the future.įreedom Planet 2 will release on September 13 for PC and consoles.Over the last few days, I’ve had the pleasure of playing around with a demo for Freedom Planet 2, which is in development at GalaxyTrail. Thanks to the initial game's success, Freedom Planet characters have shown up in other indie games as crossovers lead character Sash Lilac has appeared in several games including A Hat in Time, Runbow, and Indie Pogo. The Unity engine allowing for new features like dynamic zoom give the game even more of its own style, cementing Freedom Planet 2 as a modernized, improved take on the original's concepts. The sequel takes on its own style and uses higher-resolution sprites to create more detailed characters and separate itself from the heavily Genesis-inspired style of its predecessor. The characters in the original game, while differentiated, are still somewhat Sonic-like given its origins as a fangame.

To differentiate itself from its inspirations, Freedom Planet 2 brings changes to character designs.

As such, Freedom Planet 2 has a lot to live up to, but the playable demo that is currently available shows a lot of potential. The original Freedom Planet was well-received around its release in 2014, and since then it has amassed a dedicated fan following. The change in release date will leave more time to recover as the rest of the team continues finishing the project. The post from GalaxyTrail lays out the reason why release was pushed back from its earlier estimation of spring 2022, citing testing and certification for console ports and the lead developer unfortunately suffering a hand injury.
